MONTELEONE D’ORVIETO · ALTO ORVIETANO
A village to discover on foot.
A road to follow out of curiosity.
A house to come home to.

01 · OUR STARTING POINT
The Monteleone lies in the countryside of Monteleone d’Orvieto, in Umbria’s Alto Orvietano area, close to the Tuscan border. The village is there on the hill: a country track of around 700 metres leads to it from the property.
Start with a walk, without too much of a plan. The brickwork changes colour with the light, lanes open onto squares and, as you reach the Torrione tower, the landscape opens out across the Valdichiana. It is a lovely way to get to know the place you have chosen to stay.
The connection with Orvieto goes back centuries: Monteleone began as a castle defending its border. The village kilns also produced bricks, glass and mosaic materials for Orvieto’s cathedral. A thread of history connects this small village to the city you will visit.

The Teatro dei Rustici and the church of Santi Pietro e Paolo reveal a village whose interiors are worth exploring too. Ask us for visitor information.
This viewpoint deserves a few extra minutes. Ahead lies the Valdichiana; further away, the silhouettes of Mount Cetona and Mount Amiata.
02 · TWO DIRECTIONS, TWO DAYS TO PLAN
Monteleone is your starting point for exploring the area. Città della Pieve and Orvieto are two places we love to recommend: choose one for the day and leave time for a stop along the way.
CITTÀ DELLA PIEVE
Red brickwork accompanies your walk through the birthplace of Perugino. In the Oratorio di Santa Maria dei Bianchi, look for his Adoration of the Magi; between visits, follow the lanes to viewpoints over the countryside.
Our suggestion is simple: make time for art, but also for sitting down, ordering something and watching village life.
Explore Città della PieveORVIETO
Orvieto rises on its tuff outcrop. The cathedral draws your gaze upwards; St Patrick’s Well and the underground routes invite you to discover what lies beneath the city.
Give it a full day, balancing the sights you want to see with time to explore the streets of the centre. Then return to The Monteleone: the countryside is waiting after your day of discovery.

03 · GET TO KNOW A PLACE AT THE TABLE
The hills you travel through are also places of work: olive groves, vineyards and woodland. A taste of olive oil, a glass of wine introduced by its maker, a truffle hunt with our partners: each brings new meaning to what you have seen.
Then there is Pina, with her homemade egg pasta and traditional Italian recipes. Start with a dish, or choose an experience and stay the night. The region becomes part of your stay, one encounter at a time.
